A new study by the Urology and Men’s Health Research Institute (UMHRI), which was the first to link erectile dysfunction with prescription drugs, showed that prescription drugs may be linked to an increased risk of erectile dysfunction.
The U. S. study, which involved men and their partners, showed that taking Viagra or another erectile dysfunction drug increased the odds of having impotence by a certain percentage. However, the research also found that the drug sildenafil also increased the risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
The study, by Dr. Steven Nissen, MD, a urology professor at the University of California San Francisco, and colleagues, showed that erectile dysfunction is a common problem among men with ED.
The researchers found that patients who used ED drugs were more likely to develop erectile dysfunction, a condition known as impotence. They also found that men who took the drugs were more likely to have low blood pressure, high blood pressure, or a heart condition, as well as other conditions that could increase the risk of erectile dysfunction.
“Erectile dysfunction is not an easy diagnosis to address, but the results of the study showed that the drug sildenafil, when combined with nitrates for chest pain, may be an effective treatment,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Steven Nissen, MD, the U. S.’s lead researcher in the study.
Dr. Nissen and colleagues then looked at data from the U. and Canadian studies of the risk of ED for prescription drugs.
The researchers looked at the number of prescriptions for erectile dysfunction drugs in the U. over the course of eight years, from 1998 to 2010. They also looked at the number of prescriptions for other conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.
The researchers found that when taking sildenafil, a drug with a stronger effect on blood vessel dilation, the risk of developing erectile dysfunction was much higher than when using an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. But when taken in combination with nitrates, the increased risk was much lower than when taking an ACE inhibitor.
The researchers found that when taking sildenafil, the risk of developing erectile dysfunction was much higher than when using an angiotensin converting enzyme (ATE) inhibitor. The researchers also found that the combination of sildenafil and nitrates increased the risk of developing erectile dysfunction, which was about twice as much as using an ACE inhibitor.
The researchers also found that patients taking an ARB drug had an increased risk of developing erectile dysfunction. Patients who used an ARB drug were also more likely to have low blood pressure, high blood pressure, or a heart condition, as well as other conditions that could increase the risk of erectile dysfunction.
“These results provide strong evidence that combining sildenafil with an ACE inhibitor may be effective and may be a useful treatment for erectile dysfunction,” Dr. Nissen said. “The findings suggest that the combination of sildenafil and an ARB drug may be a useful treatment for erectile dysfunction.”
“It’s important to note that the overall risk of developing erectile dysfunction is very low,” Dr. Nissen added.
